Quoth Mitt Romney in the NYT: "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt"

| понедельник, 28 сентября 2009 г.

Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor, former entrant in the marathon to win the White House, and current automotive industry expert (who knew?) had a few things to say in the New York Times today on the potential auto industry bailout. The opening paragraph says it all: "IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won't go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed."

Romney is not rooting for the end of the biz, but he believes that bankruptcy is the only way to save it because it will force a reset, and that will be the only way for the Detroit 3 to rectify entrenched structural problems. These include UAW contracts -- "a new direction for the UAW," executive perks -- "sanity in salary and perks," getting rid of old blood -- "management as is must go," just for starters.

Romney believes that the auto industry is crucial to America's national interest in more ways than one. And he isn't against helping the U.S. automakers, but believes that a shock to the system is the only thing that can rescue it, long term. Have a look at the piece and let us know what you think -- but no need to make a decision yet; give it another few minutes, and we're sure someone else will have another prescription. Thanks for the tip, Mike!

The Mazda 2 may lead to an all new Fiesta

| суббота, 26 сентября 2009 г.

mazda 2 ford fiestaOn the Auto Show circuit this year Mazda unveiled their Mazda 2. While the term sub-compact seems to be auspiciously absent in any press releases or coverage on the Mazda 2 its size and shape seems to harken back to some cars that were at one time the darlings of fuel efficiency. Instead of being called a sub-compact marketing strategists are prefering to call them B-cars.

Where those cars left off the new Mazda 2 begins anew and with more style than any of the cars from yester-year. If any comparison could be applied to the Mazda 2 it would be to refer to it as a shrunken CX-7 or a shortened Mazda 3; which by some views would be a respectible comparison.

As the Mazda 2 looks to face up against the Toyota Yaris and the Honda Fit another in-house competitor is expected to reach the market in 2009 with an all too familiar name. Ford is working on producing a new Fiesta that will share the same platform as the Mazda 2.

Automakers obviously see a market for these B-cars as the same fuel efficiency concerns that ushered in the sub-compact market return as a driving force. But it might require some very interesting retooling for the Fiesta to fight its way amongst the competition.

As the photo of a concept Ford Fiesta shows above, they just  might just have something to work with here. It might not be your dads old Fiesta, but wouldn’t that be a good thing?

Ford Making Stability Control Standard by 2009

| пятница, 10 июля 2009 г.

2007fordfusion

After word that the government may mandate standard stability control around 2010, Ford announced today that it wouldn’t have to worry about any government infractions. The company says every Ford, Lincoln and Mercury car and truck will have stability control as a standard feature by 2009. Currently, stability control is standard on mid- and full-size Ford SUVs, and will be standard on small SUVs and upcoming crossovers like the Ford Edge and Lincoln MDX MKX by the end of 2007. We’re big fans of stability control technology and expect other major automakers to follow Ford’s move.
