Car Manufacturers that offer CVTs

| суббота, 25 июля 2009 г.

Lexus GS450h

The other day a friend asked me which car companies currently offer CVTs in their line-up.

I remember when the Subaru Justy was the only car available with a Continuously Variable Transmission. Then, after an absence of a few years, the innovative transmissions started to reappear in hybrids.

Today CVTs are increasingly common place. A variety of cars, vans, and SUVs transfer power to the wheels via the stepless transmissions. The next car you drive may have one!

The following Manufacturers offer CVT equipped models:

American:
Dodge, Ford, Jeep, Mercury, Saturn

European:
Audi, Fiat, Mercedes, MG, Microcar, Mini, Opel, Rover

Asian:
Honda, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota

If you are wondering how exactly a CVT differs (no cog-like gears) from a manual or automatic, you can always ask Marshall Brain.

Rip Off: 2008 Nissan Nismo 350Z

| вторник, 21 июля 2009 г.

nismo_350z.jpg

The Nissan 350Z has been around and unchanged for over four years now. So to spice up it’s sales, Nissan has decided that it’s time for a new special edition!

Enter the 2008 Nissan Motorsports 350z (NISMO 350z), tuned by Nissan’s in-house after market tuning division. Should we fire up the marching band and throw a welcoming party? HARDLY.

NISMO performance parts are available around the world and are extremely popular for the Japanese markets. NISMO was responsible for the R33 Skyline 400R and S14 Silvia 270R models. Both featured comprehensive modifications to the drive train, suspension, brakes, chassis, and aero work. Getting excited yet? DON’T.

With this being said it is an absolute disappointment that this new NISMO 350z will not further modify and tune the current stock 3.5-liter: V-6 306 horsepower & 268 lb-ft of torque. Also, the current 350z’s six-speed manual transmission and viscous limited-slip differential will also go unchanged.

Rest assured the car does get newly tuned suspension, Brembo brakes, and NISMO exhaust. Apparently the 350Z’s production will be quite limited (yaaaa right), and deliveries begin in July of 2007.

For those less concerned about the lack of engine modifications, the most obvious cues for the NISMO will be the new front and rear fascias, side skirts, and functional rear diffuser and wing (useless for a un-modified 350z engine), along with the NISMO-branded Ray’s engineering wheels. Painted in gunmetal grey; 18’s in the front and 19’s in the rear. All will be wearing Bridgestone RE050A rubbers.

To further coax the owner into feeling special while parading in their ‘faux-NISMO’, NISMO badges will adorn new black and red cloth seats with red stitching, along with new white and gray gauges. Final touches to each NISMO 350Z will include a serialized aluminum plaque on the center console, just to make owners feel even more special and less ripped off.

The GT-R’s pricing appears to be mainly relative to the two types of brakes ...

| среда, 8 июля 2009 г.

gt-r.jpg

According to Autoexpress sources, rumor has it that the base version of Nissan’s answer to the Porsche 911 will be extremely competitive in pricing. The GT-R’s pricing appears to be mainly relative to the two types of brakes and transmissions available, as well as the uber-awesome GT-R Evolution version loaded with sexy carbon fiber parts!

The Entry-level GT-R (£29,000 or $57,107.07 USD) will rock a slick six-speed manual gearbox and four-piston Brembo brakes. Not to bad for it’s entry level, but keep in mind it must compete with the entry level 911.

The V-spec GT-R (£35,000 or $68,909.58 USD) will bring you to a screaching halt with six-piston Brembos and a dual-clutch, two-pedal, seven-speed DSG box. Please note this is not another variant of the garbage technology plaguing many sports cars called Tiptronic. I always laugh when I ask someone if their car has a manual transmission and they answer YES…….. then rebuttle with ‘well its Tiptronic’… Sorry but not even close buddy.

For those of you new to DSG, the unit uses an inner and an outer clutch to engage and disengage cogs. The outer pack drives gears 1, 3, and 5; while the inner clutch pack drives 2, 4, and 6. Using complicated electronic algorithms, the drivers selected gear is engaged by one clutch pack while the previous gear is disengaged by the other. A nice clean detailed writeup with pictures on the DSG box can be found HERE.

The GT-R Evolution (£52,000 or $102,376.92 USD) wearing many carbon fiber parts will further reduce its weight and make it more HARDCORE for the HARDCORE.
