With all this Gumball talk, and RedLine opening just EIGHT days from now, I have to post up the opening credits scene from the original Cannonball Run movie.
The 1981 comedy about the illegal cross-country road race was written by Brock Yates, of Car and Driver fame, who had organized the real-life race as a protest against the 55 mph speed limit. Yates and co-driver Dan Gurney (Le Mans/ F1 winner) also won the first Cannonball, blasting from NYC to LA in 35hr 53min, in a Ferrari Daytona coupe.
The stunning black Countach used in the movie was lent to the studio by Ron Rice, owner of Hawaiian Tropic, and friend of Burt Reynolds.
If you really enjoyed that, check out the opening scene from the 1984 sequel, but be warned, this clip is 8 minutes long, and the Lamborghini shows up only from the 2:43 mark onwards.
